Junker Center for Student Recreation
Penn State Erie, The Behrend College

Erie, PA

The Junker Center for student recreation at Penn State Erie, Behrend Campus, is a $10 million dollar project. The center includes an eight-lane, indoor competition pool and a 29,000 SF gymnasium which includes three basketball floors, a competition basketball floor, and an indoor running track.

The building includes classrooms, an alumni room, staff offices, and a health and fitness center with aerobics, a weight room, team rooms, and lockers that support other student activities.

The architectural design responds to the Penn State Campus Master Plan and recognizes the east-west mall that will lead to future developments east of this building. The building spans the future pedestrian mall so that activities within the building are evident to students passing through 24 hours a day.

The site is environmentally sensitive - nearby wetlands were respected and adjacent hillsides and drainage courses will be enhanced. Much of the site is contained within a wooded area east of Jordan Road; minimum disturbance of this area was considered in the design.
